Slow Computer – The Causes and the Creators

Geez, how frustrating is it to be running a slow computer that has trouble even starting up? I can’t even load my web browser in under a minute.  And the thing is, I’ve only had my PC for about 5 months.

If this sounds like you, then we can definitely relate.

After my computer kept getting slower and slower by the minute, I decided that I was no longer interested in just swapping out my fairly new machine for a brand new one just because I didn’t know how to speed up my computer. So, I decided to do some research.

I started searching the Internet and reading through computer forums that dealt with the topic “speed up windows” or “speed up my PC”. I even called computer technicians. I was determined to understand how to speed up my computer and to and why it became so slow in the first place.

My research brought me to some fundamental conclusions regarding computer speed.

One is that computers (PCs in specific) are prone to be attacked by trojan horses, spyware, adware, and various other malicious software that drain your computers speed. When I would surf on the web, even to seemingly legitimate websites, these harmful bugs would install themselves in my computers registry.

I began to understand that because PC computers have been around for so many years and because millions of people use them throughout the world, scammers and thieves have spent hundreds and hundreds of hours developing ways to exploit many innocent PC owners and users.

You may ask, “What’s the point of creating viruses? What do they get out of it?”

Well, honestly, many enjoy the idea of knowing that they designed something that is having such a widespread effect, even if that effect is negative, like making a computer slow. But there are monetary reasons as well.

Actually, a recent computer worm that spread over millions of computers through websites and e-mails, would alert PC users that their computer had a virus and that to take care of it, they needed to purchase a specific anti-virus program. The anti-virus program was of course a fake and the virus creator would simply receive the money that the unsuspecting computer owner paid.

These worms, adware, trojans, etc. typically affect the computer’s registry. And, when the registry is damaged, a computer slows down tremendously. So, from my research I understood that one main key to computer speed and for me to speed up my computer is to have a clean registry.
